Celebrations!
Aren’t celebrations wonderful? We have been so abundantly blessed and our celebrations are a way of giving praise back to God for all that he does for us and gives to us. We’ve recently enjoyed several celebrations around here. We want you to share in the joy and praise of each of them.

Halle turned 50!
On Sunday, July 22nd, friends and family all joined together to help Halle up and over the hill to start the second half of life! It was a great celebration full of surprises and fun. It started with the long-awaited (fictional) team from Montana that was due to arrive on Wednesday, July 18th. Due to their untimely arrival we were going to postpone Halle’s birthday celebration until the 29th of July. At least that’s what Halle was led to believe. Actually the Montana team was really our 3 sons, their 2 wives and Halle’s mom arriving from Washington. Halle was completely surprised. As we waited at the airport for the “team” to walk out of immigration into the baggage claim area Halle was watching for a group of American youth with that slightly bewildered look in their eyes. Instead he saw someone he thought looked like his son, Britton, but with his shaved head Halle wasn’t sure it was him. Then he spotted our son Brookes with his unmistakable smile. “That’s Brookes!” he said, “And Brandon! There’s my mom… my family!” And then he dropped to his knees with tears of joy in his eyes. He was overwhelmed, surprised, and filled with joy! That was the beginning of a wonderful birthday celebration with our family. We went to the beach, played games and laughed a lot. The evening of the 22nd we celebrated Halle’s day along with about 40 guests. The evening ended with a toast to Halle and to the many years that still lay ahead! Thank you to all who sent their good wishes and prayers in the birthday cards that were brought down. Halle was touched to think that so many were thinking of him on his 50th birthday!

Manna project and El Farito
Celebration of the arts!

Earlier in the month the Manna Project group who has been teaching classes at El Farito culminated their year of teaching with a grand production showcasing some of the wonderful things their students (the children and young adults of Cedro Galan) have been learning. There was dancing, guitar playing and singing, drama and several songs by a small youth choir. It is difficult to put to words how incredible it was to see the children performing with confidence and smiles and the young adults dancing and performing with pride. Then, if you happened to shift your gaze to the audience while the performance was going on, you’d see beaming faces in the crowd enjoying the show with smiles bursting with pride. Those were the faces of the parents who have probably never seen their children in this kind of performance before. It was complete with a stage, sound system and props. Our pictures help to give you a bit of the flavor of the evening but to really appreciate it you might like to download a 6-minute video. Here’s the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kw2tIbtdexM . A huge hug and many thanks go to the folks at Manna Project who have given a big part of their lives to be here, work with the youth and young adults of Cedro Galan (our ministry center neighborhood), and to make a difference in their lives.

Celebrating god’s goodness
All the time!

God is good . . . all the time! We have definitely learned to celebrate God’s goodness in the good times and through the more difficult times as well. We’re getting pretty tired of the daily power outages, but especially during the 5:00 – 10:00 pm outages, we find ourselves sitting on the porch, slowing down and having conversations that we would otherwise be too busy to have and watching the dancing fireflies under the mango trees. There is something good about power outages after all.

Last month, with Halle’s big birthday bash quickly approaching we knew there was a good chance that we’d have to deal with a power outage the night of the party. We were prepared for an outage but Kathy (and perhaps others) had been diligently praying that the power would stay on. And it did!!! July 22nd was the only day sandwiched between 20 days that we didn’t lose power. God is good . . . all the time!

Last May our home church family at Woodinville Community United Methodist Church decided to commit to helping us to raise funds to buy a small 30 passenger bus (Toyota Coaster). Within just a month they had accumulated quite a chunk towards the goal and were waiting to meet the goal before sending the money our way. Bit by bit it was still coming in and, while waiting to reach the goal, we started looking at used Coasters which was what we figured we’d be able to afford. Well, you can imagine our excitement when we received a message from our church’s financial secretary telling us a very large individual donation to the Coaster fund has put the total so far up and over our expectations that now we’re planning to buy a NEW Toyota Coaster. We are celebrating God’s goodness expressed through the incredible generosity of our supporters. Thank you so much!

Praise and pray

Praise God for changed lives! Recently a couple of guys from the neighborhood, Jose and Lester, have given their lives to the Lord. After hearing about Jose becoming a Christia, Amanda saw him one day and said, “Hey, what’s this I hear about you?” He grinned and said, “Ya! I’m a brother!” It was great to hear it from his own mouth and without hesitation or embarrassment. Please continue to pray for the youth in our area.

Back to school time is a good time to ask you to pray for the scholarship program that we sponsor for our preschool students at El Farito. Last year, through several individual sponsors and other donations we were able to scholarship 4 kindergarteners and 3 first graders to a high quality Christian school in the neighborhood. We have 4 more graduating pre-schoolers who will be ready for Kindergarten next year. That will make 11 students that we would like to sponsor. Please pray about the support that is needed for this program. We will be sending out a special newsletter in a few weeks that will be dedicated to providing you more information about this program and how you might be able to help.

Thank you all for your on-going love, support and friendships.
Serving Together,
Halle and Kathy August
